The Antioch
Baptist Church Ministry to the deaf in Little Rock began in 1949. The
Sunday School classes and Sunday morning worship services are conducted
in a separate chapel from the hearing congregation of Antioch church.
The purpose
for this structure, which has continued for more than fifty years, has
been to provide a meaningful ministry designed for deaf participation.
|
The services
are specifically designed for those who are deaf to lead the singing,
serve as ushers, give devotionals, and have opportunities to serve in
every area of ministry. Though the deaf meet in a seperate chapel for
Sunday morning services, they are membeers of the Antioch congregation.
The purpose is to maintain our services in a way that has special significance
for the deaf and also to be included in the membership and total ministry
of Antioch church.
|
The Deaf
Ministry has an outreach to the hearing families as well. Many of our
deaf congregation have hearing family members. Because of these communications
needs, the Minister to the Deaf communicates by voice and sign simultaneously.
(sim-com method) This serves the needs of all in attendance. The deaf,
hard of hearing, and the hearing family and friends are all able to
worship and learn together.
The Deaf
Ministry of Antioch also maintains an outreach to the students at the
Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock.

About Brother
Slagley
Bro.
Bob was saved when he was 22 years old. He surrendered to preach
when he was 25 years old. Brother Slagley is a graduate of the
Missionary Baptist Seminary. He has worked with the Deaf Ministry
of
Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church since 1983.
Brother
Slagley and his wife Jan have two sons; Jonathan, and Jeremy. The youngest,
Jeremy has been deaf from birth. Jeremy's deafness greatly influenced
Bro. Slagley as he felt the Lord was leading him to work with Deaf
Ministry. He saw there were so few churches that had a deaf ministry.
He felt there was a great need to provide opportunities for the deaf
to worship and serve the Lord. He sees the deaf community as a field
that is truly, "white for harvest."
